How do I know if I’m a good candidate for photo facials?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. IPL photofacial treatments deliver broadband light through the skin, helping to restore youthful looking skin. It works most effectively on Fitzpatrick skin types 1 – 4 and reduces redness and sun damage.
THE SUN
Good candidates for IPL photofacials are individuals who have photo-aged or sun damaged skin. What is photoaging? Photoaging happens to skin from prolonged exposure over a person’s lifetime to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Many of the same changes in the skin that occur as we get older are greatly accelerated by sun exposure.
What are some signs of sun-damaged and/or photo-aged skin?
Irregular coloring or pigmentation of the skin
Permanent stretching (dilation) of small blood vessels, giving skin a mottled, reddish appearance
Flat spots of increased pigmentation, usually brown, black or gray, known as liver spots
Vertical creases, deep wrinkles, and loose or sagging skin caused by a breakdown of the skin’s connective tissue (collagen and elastin fibers)
Melasma, which is a brown darkening of facial skin that can be due to hormonal changes or sun damage.
IPL photofacials treat a number of different signs of sun damage as well as other dermatological issues, such as:
Fine lines and wrinkles caused by aging
Irregular pigmentation caused by sun damage, aging or medication
Brown spots or diffuse facial redness
Broken capillaries and vascular lesions
Who’s not a good candidate for IPL photofacials? People with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick Skin Type 4-6) or tanned skin and people with deep wrinkles, scars or severe acne or active rosacea.
If you’re a candidate for IPL photofacials, you should definitely consider them. The procedure itself is also very gentle. Skin rejuvenation techniques such as chemical peels tend to generate stinging and burning. This often necessitates a few days spent recovering – not exactly convenient for people with active lifestyles. With photofacials, however, you can return to work the same day as a treatment!
HOW DO IPL PHOTOFACIALS WORK?
IPL photofacials work by using a broad-spectrum light source that penetrates multiple layers of skin. This type of photo facial primarily targets the lower layers of skin (dermis) while leaving the top layers of skin (epidermis) unaffected. The heat generated from the light promotes healing of the skin within, treating a number of different dermatological issues.
Photofacials typically require little to no recovery time. Following treatment, you can return to your normal activities.
Before the IPL treatment, a medical professional will apply a cold gel to the target area, and you’ll be required to wear protective eyewear. The treatment lasts around 20 minutes, during which a medical professional will gently apply the IPL handpiece to your skin so that healing light rays can be delivered to the skin’s surface using precise pulses. Most IPL procedures are virtually painless, but more sensitive people might experience mild discomfort. Photofacials typically require little to no recovery time. Following treatment, you can return to your normal activities. You may experience mild redness and sometimes darker brown pigmentation or a coffee ground appearance for up to two weeks after the procedure.
IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO REVERSE AGING WITH IPL PHOTOFACIALS
You can expect outstanding results with IPL photofacials. But you must be diligent about scheduling treatment sessions. IPL photofacial treatments call for six to twelve treatment sessions spaced four weeks apart to obtain desired results. In some cases, those results can be seen after only the first treatment! And skin continues to improve with each successive treatment.
