How Botox Can Help You Ice That Deal
According to recent research, the number of American men getting Botox injections — which relax facial muscles to minimize lines and wrinkles — has skyrocketed some 258% over the past decade or so. This is attributed to the fact that men are much more open and proactive about their appearance. And men who have tried Botox look better, feel better, and believe it gives them a competitive edge both professionally and personally.
Are you considering giving Botox a try? Well, here you can get insight into:
- Choosing the best provider
- What to expect
- Aftercare
The Science Behind Botox
Botox is a neurotoxin that works by attaching itself to nerve endings. Once this happens, the neurotransmitter responsible for triggering muscle contractions, acetylcholine, can’t be released. Essentially, Botox injections temporarily relax the facial muscles that underlie and cause wrinkles. This is also why wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity don’t respond to Botox treatments.
The Right Botox Provider
Make sure you choose a medical provider who specializes in Botox for men, because there are significant differences in the outcome of injectables for either sex. Your provider should take into account your muscle mass, muscle fiber pattern, and hair distribution. Although exact dosing regimens do not yet exist, men require higher doses of Botox than do women.
Your provider should consider the anatomical differences between male and female faces. The main difference is that female eyebrows are naturally arched, and men’s eyebrows are horizontal. If a man has Botox introduced under his eyebrows, it will feminize his looks. Experts agree that the best use of Botox on male faces is in softening the deep creases that form between the brows, which can make a man look unintentionally sad and angry.
Baldness is another factor men should consider before using Botox. A balding man can have lines that appear much higher on his face than if he were a woman. Providers should adjust the treatment area accordingly.
Men also have flatter faces than women, so they should be wary of filling any deep crevices in the skin and increasing lost volume; doing so can feminize their appearance. Though thinning lips age men in particular, filling them tends to look very obvious and feminine. Lip augmentation in men requires the greatest degree of caution and expertise.
Remember that subtlety is key when it comes to Botox. Most men don’t want people, especially coworkers, to notice they’ve had work done.
The Botox Experience
Tons of men choose Botox because it’s quick, relatively free of discomfort, and involves no downtime. But you’ll have to take certain precautions before undergoing a Botox treatment. Ten days before receiving Botox injections, you’ll be asked to refrain from taking products that contain aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E. Doing so will significantly reduce the chance of bruising following treatment.
Don’t let these precautions scare you, though. The best part about undergoing Botox is that it’s quick and quite free of discomfort. You’ll generally receive a consultation beforehand to determine the best treatment for your needs. And when you do undergo a treatment, a topical numbing gel will be applied fifteen minutes beforehand. Six to eight injections will be administered into the underlying muscles. Most people say that the injections feel similar to getting vaccinated: They feel only a few seconds of mild discomfort as the Botox enters the injection site. A few hours afterwards, the injection site may look red and feel irritated.
Immediately following the injections, you’ll be required to contract the treated muscles. Your physician will ask you to frown, raise your eyebrows, smile, and pucker your lips. This helps to evenly distribute the Botox throughout the injection site. Your physician will also tell you to refrain from exercising, bending over, lying down on, or rubbing the area for the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment. This ensures that the Botox settles in the right place and doesn’t migrate elsewhere. Failure to do so may result in facial paralysis and eyelid drooping.
Botox Results
You’re probably wondering what you can expect in the days and weeks after your first Botox treatment. Days later you may notice some bruising or swelling, which usually goes away within 24 hours. The full effect of Botox takes a few days. Normally you’ll see full effects three to five days later, but sometimes they can take up to two weeks. Everyone’s different.
Botox’s effects fade with time. The injections generally last between two and four months. During this time, you may notice facial wrinkles slowly coming back. When you start to notice this happening, you can be treated again, or you can wait until the Botox has completely worn off. Most physicians recommend that you get treated again before your wrinkles fully return. The best part of Botox is that, over time, it actually retrains the underlying muscles that cause your dynamic wrinkles to relax. The muscles get smaller, and less Botox is required.
The Botox Edge
Metrosexuality accounts for the increasing popularity of Botox among men, and it offers a quick fix with no downtime. Surprisingly, the economy is a major factor, too. Men feel increasingly pressured to maintain a more attractive and youthful look in a highly competitive job market, especially when they’re interviewing for positions. Maintaining a youthful appearance allows men — and women — to generate more revenue than their older-looking peers, which is an important asset in a leaner workforce.
